How to Choose the Perfect Christmas Gifts

There are many different reasons why people are difficult to buy presents for. Sometimes they are so minimalist that buying them a small pen would clutter up their house. Other people already have everything because they are well off. The only solution is to knit them a hat, because they won't have one of those. Of course, next year they will have one, so you'll have to make them a papier-mache hat box.
Other people are difficult because they hate everything, including you. These people, or teenagers, have cleverly seen through the hypocrisy of Christmas. If you can be bothered making an effort, then irony is good. Knit them a skateboard. Or if you can stomach it, give them cash. No teenager has ever been ironic or knowing enough to decline cash (or cheques, postal orders etc).
Have you ever wondered why old ladies' houses often have an overpowering smell of lavender? It's because 50 years ago they mentioned that they liked lavender. The word spread, and now all their relatives buy them lavender-based products, even though they have developed a potentially fatal allergy to it.
Unless men buy what they want, wrap it and stick it under the tree, they won't get what they want for Christmas. Women sometimes ask men what they want, but they're not interested in the answer. When you say you want a large print of the Battle of Inkerman, they think you're just being funny. What they hear is that you want a new set of pillow cases.
Buying presents for women is easy and difficult at the same time. The easy part is asking them what they want. The difficult part is then being forced to shop for it. Just because women know what they want, doesn't mean they don't have to visit 400 different outlets to get it.
Christmas is really all about the children, who cutely apply peer pressure to your wallet. You will then be forced to find that year's most popular piece of extruded plastic. You could try forgetting the toy and just get the batteries. Tell the children that the batteries are the soul of the toy and their fun Christmas quest is to go and search out the missing body.
If it's the thought that counts, there are certain presents that count for nothing. In this category comes anything that comes from the local newsagent just before they close on Christmas Eve - boxes of chocolates, calendars with cottages on, lighter fuel, Michael Jackson albums etc.

Choosing a Christmas tree

There’s nothing quite like a real Christmas tree to decorate a room and fill your home with that nostalgic seasonal aroma – but did you know that they’re also beneficial to the environment? Real trees are renewable, recyclable and while they’re growing they provide habitats for wildlife and absorb carbon dioxide and other gases.
With so many varieties of trees available, it can be hard to decide on the best tree for you. We’ve listed the most popular varieties below to help choose one that meets your needs.

Nordman fir

Currently the top choice for indoor Christmas tree. The lush, glossy, rich green needles are soft and dense making it easy to decorate and the strong branches will support your lights and decorations to create a stunning display. Excellent needle retention.

Noble fir

Beautiful soft green-blue needles, neat compact branches and a heavenly fragrance make this tree a perfect choice for a festive home. With excellent needle retention and strong dense foliage this tree truly is a noble choice.

Fraser fir

Quite often sold with pine cones still attached, this tree has a gorgeous citrus scent, dark green foliage and string branches. The Fraser fir tends to grow with a more compact, upright habit making it a good choice for smaller rooms. As with our other firs, keep well watered to help retain the needles.

Norway spruce

The traditional choice for Christmas trees, strong branches make for easy decorating, although the needles can tend to be fairly sharp and will drop in heated rooms. Keep outside as long as possible then bring in to an un-heated or cool room for best needle retention.

Blue spruce

As its name suggests, this tree is more of a blue-grey colour creating a nice contrast of colours. Strong branches and a rich festive scent combine with good needle retention to make this tree a pleasure to decorate and display. They quite often have a wide base, making a perfect place to hide presents.

Scots pine

Strong branches with twisted green/blue needles. A superb choice for needle retention, the Scots pine will fill any room with a pine perfume throughout the festive season.

Cut or pot grown?

Most people buy cut Christmas trees, but it is possible to buy potted or pot grown. Potted Christmas trees have usually been dug up and potted up, and don’t generally last much longer than a well cared for cut tree, and won’t establish well in the garden afterwards.
Pot-grown trees are more likely to be successful for growing on from year to year, but don’t keep them in the house for too long or too warm and make sure the compost is kept moist.

Care advice

Here’s some top tips to keep your real cut Christmas tree looking great for as long as possible:
  1. Keep the tree outside for as long as possible, until you are ready to bring it indoors and decorate it.
  2. Make a fresh cut of about 13mm (0.5in) at the base of the trunk - this will help it absorb water, stay fresh and reduce needle drop.
  3. Stand your tree in a water-holding tree stand - these will provide a good size water reservoir and also stability for your tree.
  4. A cut tree can easily drink 500ml (1 pint) a day, so keep the reservoir topped up.
  5. Keep your tree as cool as possible - and certainly away from sources of heat, such as radiators and open fires.
  6. Try not to buy a tree which has been stored netted, and remove the netting as soon as you get home - heat will build up inside a netted tree and cause needles to drop.
  7. Remove any unsightly lower branches but don’t throw them away - tie them together at the base to create fan shaped door decoration.

How to measure and pick the correct size bicycle

Bike frame sizes, how to measure and pick the correct size bicycle

You don't have to be an expert or get a professional fitting to determine what bicycle frame size is right for you. There are some quick and easy ways to measure your body and determine the bikes that will work for you.

The quick and easy way: Height and leg length

You probably know your height but do you know your leg length? Leg length plays a larger role in bicycle fitting than height - by far. Leg length can vary greatly between people with the same overall height. It determines how high your seat will be and, more importantly, whether you'll be able to stand over your bike when you get off the saddle.
Let's get started:
  1. Get a tape measure.
  2. Put on the shoes you'll be riding in most often.
  3. Measure from where your heel touches the ground to the base of your leg at the crotch.
  4. This measurement is called your "in-seam" length and is a pretty good measurement of leg length.
The length of your inseam is pretty directly tied to another measurement called "stand over height" which indicates the height of the frame at the point where you would be standing directly over it, as if you've just hopped off the seat. It's very important the your inseam length is at least 1 inch longer than the stand over height of the bicycle you ride. This is to avoid the top tube of the frame hitting you painfully as you jump off your bike - especially if you stop suddenly.

Saddle height - get the most out of your bike:

Set your bike against a wall and sit on it, leaning against the wall. This way you'll be able to simulate a riding position without actually moving. Follow these directions to get the seat at the right height:
  1. Put on the shoes you'll wear when riding.
  2. Sit on the bike.
  3. Rotate one of the pedals so that it's in it's lowest position.
  4. Put your heel on that pedal.
  5. Check if your leg is all the way straight at the knee.
  6. If your heel cannot touch the pedal, your seat is too high. If your heel touches the pedal and your leg is perfectly straight or just a tiny bit bent, your seat is at a good height. If your heel touches the pedal and your leg is really bent then your seat is too low.
  7. Adjust your seat accordingly up or down (or not at all if it's a good match).
  8. Now sit on your bike and put the ball of your foot on the pedal. Your leg should be bent a bit at the knee. This is a good seat height to get the most out of your legs.

Fully adjustable and portable bicycles

Don't want to worry about frame sizes? We carry a variety of folding bikes that have a one-size-fits-all frame. These bikes can be adjusted to accommodate any rider, despite their height. Here are a few models we'd recommend:

Most of our folding bikes have a low top tube and an adjustable seat post, so anyone from 5'1" to 6'4" can ride a bike like this. Dahon folding bikes have adjustable seat posts and handlebars, while Brompton folding bikes allow extensions for taller riders. Though folding bikes generally have smaller wheels, they tend to be great commuter bikes because of their compact folded shape, as well as their durable frames.

How to Select Floor Lamps

Floor lamps play a vital role in determining the decor of any room. That's is why it is very important to select them with utmost care otherwise getting it wrong when choosing them can greatly affect the general appearance of an otherwise elegantly furnished house. For people who are shopping for floor lamps for the first time, it can be very difficult to choose the ideal ones. Floor lamps come in many sizes and styles and picking the right one from such a huge selection can be a rather daunting task for first timers. The following tips can however help anyone shopping floor lamps to do confidently regardless of his experience in doing it.

The first thing that one should consider before choosing any floor lamp is the décor that has been adopted in room in which it will be fitted. However, this should also be guided by the general décor of your home that can be determined by a number of factors including the country where you are staying and the décor theme you want to adopt among others.

For instance, if you want to give room a look that is arty, a well designed tripod floor lamp can be a perfect choice. The second crucial thing that one should consider when choosing a floor lamp is its purpose. This includes putting in to consideration what the lamp will primarily be used for whether it writing, reading, art object, lighting for accent purposes among others. For instance, arc floor lamps are great accent pieces that can be used to enhance a modern theme of a house.

Keep in mind where you are going to place the lamp that you are buying too. For example, antique tripod floor lamps can look great in the living room but cannot fit in the kitchen, bathroom or even the game room. Consider also where the lamp will be placed including whether it will placed on the dresser, chest, mantel, armoire or table among other places.

Another thing that you need to take in to consideration when you are buying is its size. You see, you do not want to cram up your small living room with huge floor lamps .Not only will it appear awkward, it will also be uninviting. Similarly, having too small lamps for rather huge room will make it appear unbalanced. If you are choosing a torchiere floor lamp, make sure that you have the dimensions of the room where it will be used. The same thing applies when you are choosing vintage tripod floor lamps.

Before choosing any type of floor lamp, make sure that you have checked the material that it is made of as well. This is because some materials are more durable than others despite the similarity in the appearance of the lamps. Lastly, you need to know your how much you are planning to spend on the floor lamps you are planning to buy. Some lamps can cost you a fortune and if you are living on a bootstrap budget, it can unwise to buy them. The good news is that there are many stores with a wide selection of high quality floor lamps.

How to choose a guitar

The following key issues are critical in selecting your guitar and even more so if you’re selecting it for your child. As a parent, grandparent or caregiver, you fulfill many important roles in your child’s life. Your gift and provision of music, encouragement and confidence can last a lifetime. Having an appropriately sized and adjusted instrument is the best way to start. Each item below will give you new insight and help guarantee your success in accomplishing your musical desires.
Most importantly, only select a guitar you know is fully inspected and adjusted for easy playability, accuracy in tuning, intonation and tone production.
Many important issues rest on the quality and playability of your instrument. Always get the facts. Ask what has been done to make the instrument easy to play. There is no greater impedance to progress, developing proper technique and the enjoyment of learning to play than a poorly constructed instrument or one that is not correctly set up
Choose the kind of guitar that interests you the most. This way you will be more motivated to play.
Many people mistakenly purchase an inexpensive acoustic guitar when they may really want an electric guitar. Often they are afraid they or their child will not stick with it. This is almost like buying a guarantee for failure. A cheaply made acoustic guitar will certainly lead you to quit because it is physically just too hard to play and coupled with the fact its not what you really wanted in the first place. Also, the technical approach for the electric, acoustic or classical guitar is different. In other words, if you master the acoustic guitar it will not necessarily translate well to the electric guitar. The next time you go to a concert or watch videos of your favorite bands and performers, notice the technical and musical way the instruments are being played is not the same when an acoustic guitar is being played and when a electric guitar is being played. The chords, notes and scales may look the same but the approach to playing the chords, notes and scales is different. Choose the kind of guitar you are most interested in playing
Select the right size guitar.
This is especially true for children. A guitar that is too large will make it difficult for your child to make the proper reach with both the right and left hands. Having their arm as high as their shoulder to reach over the guitar can become uncomfortable and at worst painful. Over reaching for the first fret puts them at a great technical disadvantage because their muscles are already stretched out making it difficult to properly move their fingers on the fingerboard. Generally, adults are comfortable with full size guitars.
Select a guitar that does not sell at the bottom of the price barrel.
This may seem a little difficult without giving you numbers but the old adage is almost always true, “You get what you pay for”. Sometimes you even get less. As a general rule, cheaply made guitars are not really playable or adjustable. They are not worth your time or money.
Avoid guitars and packages that promise to be a tremendous value for an amazingly low price.
The old saying,“ If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is”, is a good guide. You should see red flags when presented with guitar packages valued at $800.00 and selling for only $199.00. The difference between the value and the selling price is too great. If it sells for $199.00 then that’s about what it may be worth but not worth buying. The “$800.00 value package” would have to contain cheaply made products to only sell for $199.00. A $289.00 package at $199.00 is a much more realistic price.
Do not fall into the so-called major "Brand Name" trap.
Most major brand name companies compete with minor brand name companies for the entry and intermediate level player. Smaller brand name companies rely less on media advertising and more on dealer support and knowledge. These companies may even specialize in the entry and intermediate entry levels where as the major brands specialty is higher priced professional instruments. Obviously the cost of media advertising is included in the overall cost of the instrument. You may end up paying more for the brand name while the quality is the same or paying a competitive price for an instrument of less quality. A brand name guitar does not guarantee it to be a better guitar. As a side note, many major brand guitar makers provide free guitars to recording artist to use in concert, which is a very effective marketing tool. The fans that play guitar or want to begin playing the guitar associate the name brand with their favorite performers, not realizing that the expensive instruments they use share very little (except the name) with the entry level models.
Select a guitar with a finish and color you enjoy.
Having a guitar that not only plays and sounds well but also appeals to you visually can greatly contribute to your motivation to play and practice.
Be sure to include an electronic tuner when you select your guitar.
A tuner is about as important as having picks and strings. Keeping your guitar tuned to standard pitch is important for several reasons. First, guitars are manufactured and set-up to withstand the tension of standard pitch, which produces the best musical tone. Second, guitars are initially set-up and adjusted for standard pitch and third, standard pitch is the musical standard for most instruments. If your guitar is tuned too high above standard pitch the excessive tension can damage your instrument and at the very least break your strings. As opposed to excessively high tension, allowing your guitar to fall too far below standard pitch can cause the neck to move backward resulting in unacceptable string buzz against the frets. This can usually be remedied by tuning back to standard pitch and if necessary, by re-adjusting the truss rod.
A guitar tuner contributes to ear training.
But perhaps most importantly, a guitar tuner actually helps you develop your musical ear much more quickly than learning to tune by ear alone. A guitar tuner saves valuable time and frustration so you can stay focused on your music. Learning to tune your guitar by ear is a trial and error method largely due to the fact the ear has not been trained to selectively detect slight pitch changes between matching tones during the tuning process. Often your guitar will seem reasonably tuned when in fact it may not be. You may not even tune your guitar as often because it seems OK. The problem is your ear becomes accustomed to less than adequate tuning which prolongs your ear training development. When you use a tuner daily your ear quickly becomes accustomed to accurate tuning and you are more apt to notice when your guitar is even slightly out of tune. As a result your ears develop much more quickly.

Overview
  • Tuning machines should operate smoothly.
  • Neck joint and heel should look and feel secure.
  • The wooden bridge should be securely glued to the top.
  • The fingerboard should be level with the top of the guitar.
  • Most guitars should have an adjustable truss rod.
  • String height at the nut above the first fret should be very low.
  • Overall string height above the fingerboard should be low.
The following items will help you become more aware of what to look for in a quality, adjustable instrument and one that is inspected and properly adjusted.
The tuning machines should operate smoothly and accurately with the strings wound properly around the tuning post.
Tuning gears of less quality may tune a guitar accurately but will require more time and effort and is generally a difficult task for the uninitiated player.
The neck joint and heel should be stable and secure with no finish cracks around the joint for all guitars with set-in necks.
Electric guitars with bolt on necks should also be stable and secure with no finish cracks where the neck and body join.
For acoustic guitars, the wood bridge should be securely glued with no open gaps.
Except for children’s guitars, there should be no round pearled or black dots that conceal nuts and bolts to hold the bridge on!
The bridge hardware on electric guitars should be secure and stable.
The adjustment screws in the saddles should fit firmly but not tight. Lesser quality hardware tends to have loosely fitting adjustment screws, which can easily become stripped.
The neck should be reasonably level with the top of an acoustic guitar.
Neck angles that are too far forward or backward will tend to have or develop adjustment problems. A helpful visual indicator of a good neck angle is a bridge that is about as high off the top or soundboard of the guitar as the fingerboard. An extremely high saddle on the bridge may indicate a neck angle that is too far back.
A functional truss rod will usually make slight changes in a neck with as little as a 1/4 to 3/4's of a turn.
A functioning truss rod is important for periodically adjusting the neck/fingerboard when necessary to help keep your guitar playing easily. Classical, or nylon string guitars, traditionally do not have truss rods as these guitars are under less tension than steel string guitars. However, some full size classical intermediate guitars include an adjustable truss rod.
String height or action at the nut should be low at the first fret, which results in all six strings being easy to play.
This is necessary for all guitars and even more so for children's guitars which are generally unplayable before they are adjusted. A good test is to use your 4th finger (pinkie or smallest finger) to gently push down one string at a time at the first fret. The string should not bend excessively. There should be little effort to play the note and the tone should be clear. If this task is difficult to perform, then the guitar may not be properly adjusted. A child would find it almost impossible to play.
The bridge saddle suspends the strings over the length of the fingerboard.
A properly adjusted saddle or individual saddles for the electric guitar, will suspend the strings high enough to have minimal to no rattle or string buzz along the length of the fingerboard but low enough to be relatively easy to play. The strings by necessity have to be higher along the fingerboard than at the first fret to create room for the vibration arc of the strings. Strings that are too high above the fingerboard are not only difficult to play but also cause the strings to be stretched or pushed out of tune when attempting to play notes and chords along the length of the fingerboard.

Buying Guide - Floor Heaters

You have a huge hole in the corner of your floor that allows you to see directly into the room below you. You can hear every conversation as you try to sleep below you and you are becoming agitated. Does this sound familiar? Those old floor grates are meant to transfer heat to the upstairs because, well, there is no heat upstairs. If you have several of these, and no upstairs heat in those areas, a floor heater may be a great solution for you.
Floor Heater
Floor heaters are electric heaters that sit into the floor. Like a wall heater, air is drawn into the heater by a fan that also blows hot air out of it. These units come in a variety of sizes and can be used anywhere except where there is a significant amount of moisture commonly present (bathrooms, kitchens, etc.).
Clearances
Floor heaters follow similar clearance guild lines as wall heaters. Nothing should be placed directly against the floor heater. A minimum of 3 inches of air space should be maintained between the floor and furniture, especially beds. Most floor furnaces have an on off switch on the side of them and do no offer thermostat set points. However, there are electrical manufacturers that make high end products that are not commonly purchased in your home improvement stores. Consult your electrician for details.
Be Careful!
Be careful that you do not confuse floor heaters with floor furnaces. Floor furnaces are combustion units that use natural gas like a furnace to heat your home. These sit on the first floor and the bottom is dropped into the crawlspace. These units are only appropriate for homes with crawlspaces. Usually found in older trailer homes, these furnaces are extremely inefficient and require a lot of clearance to prevent fire hazards or injury.
Old vents
When installing the floor heaters, the old vents on the ceiling of the room below can be covered with drywall, finished and painted. This will dramatically cut down on the noise to these rooms and make the house much more comfortable as well.
Wiring and Breaker Size
Most of these units are between 100 and 400 watts. This require a 14 gauge wire and a 15 amp breaker. Each unit should have an independent breaker.
Using these heaters can make your upstairs a warm an inviting place to sleep or read a book. It will definitely be an improvement to what you have had before.

China endures worst heat in half-century

A fountain provides respite for a child in Sanlitun.

BEIJING - The sweltering summer of 2013 is going on record as the hottest summer in China since 1961.

According to a Monday microblog post by the National Meteorological Center (NMC),temperatures have reached or exceeded 35 degrees Celsius for an average of 25.3 days ineight provinces and municipalities since July 1, marking the greatest number of hot daysrecorded during the period since 1961.

Extreme heat has resulted in at least 40 deaths in south China, according to local governmentreports. Over ten people died from heatstroke in Shanghai during the period.

Outdoor laborers like sanitation workers are most vulnerable to the scorching heat. In centralChina's Hunan Province, three sanitation workers died of heatstroke within less than onemonth. Another municipal worker in east China's city of Hangzhou died while returning after anentire day of working under the blazing sun.

Authorities have for the first time declared the heat to be a second-level weather emergency, alabel normally used for typhoons and floods. The NMC issued a second-level heat alert onTuesday for the next 20 days.

In southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, high temperatures and scarce rainfall have all butobliterated the local mosquito population, according to a local resident surnamed Lei.

The municipal disease control center said the area's mosquito density in June was down 57.1 percent compared to the previous year.

Local residents who lack air conditioning have had to get creative in order to beat the heat.Computer saleswoman Wang Jing splashes water on her floor to cool her bedroom down before she goes to sleep, while her neighbor has chosen to sleep on the balcony at night.

In rural areas across south China, a worsening drought that has accompanied the persistentheat has taken a heavy toll on agriculture and made drinking water increasingly difficult toobtain.

A Tuesday report from the Hunan provincial government said 3.06 million people have sufferedfrom drinking water shortages, with the drought affecting 85.6 percent of the province'svillages.

Drinking water scarcity is also affecting 1.17 million people in the neighboring province of Hubei, where authorities said they do not expect significant rainfall until August 22.

The heat has also caused damage to the vast bamboo forests of Hunan's Taojiang County, ashigh temperatures have increased the appetites of locusts and therefore hastened theirreproduction.

The highest temperature recorded in the country was seen in the city of Fenghua in eastChina's Zhejiang Province, which recorded a historic high temperature of 43 degrees Celsiusover the last few days.

Local resident Wang Gengdi is unaccustomed to the shortage of drinking water beingexperienced in the area, as the city is close to numerous rivers and lakes.

"We haven't seen a lack of water in many years, but right now the only source of drinking waterin my village is a pond with limited supplies," she said.

Yang Jinbao, a honey peach farmer in Fenghua, has seen his honey peaches wither to the sizeof a ping-pong ball. About 800 of his honey peach trees have died.

The heat is also causing unexpected accidents. A billboard in Zhejiang mysteriously caught fireduring the heat, while in Hangzhou, 236 instances of car tires blowing out have been reported.

The NMA said Tuesday that the range and intensity of the heat will decrease over the nextthree days, although temperatures over 35 degree Celsius will persist in some areas.

On Monday, Vice Premier Wang Yang called for greater efforts to fight droughts and floods toensure the safety of those affected by the disasters.

The central government had allocated 460 million yuan ($74.6 million) to ease droughts andprevent floods by August 9.
